History and brief
Portland Square is a square of Grade II listed, Victorian terraced houses in the centre of Carlisle, Cumbria. For many years the properties have been owned and used by Carlisle City Council as offices; consequently they were connected internally. In 2019 Mr and Mrs Smith bought No.1 Portland Square, the ground floor of No.2 Portland Square (Apartment No.2a) and its rear dwelling (Apartment No.2b) to develop into their family home, an Air B&B rental apartment and Mrs Smith’s Mothers home.
The aim of the renovation and interior design of the properties is to respect and highlight the history and period features, but blend this with twenty-first century design to create timeless, transitional interiors. The colour scheme will be dark and sumptuous blended with gold chrome and rich velvet textures to create an eclectic, luxury finish. The clients love of biophilia and maximalism is seen throughout the design of these properties through vibrant wallpapers and faux plants. Oriental design elements are used across the properties, inspired by how Victorian homes often were as travel became more widely available to countries in Asia. Contemporary art and fashion inspired prints contrast with antiques and old photographs of the property, again accentuating the blend of old and new. The final element seen throughout the interior design is antiquaire in the form of distressed wallpapers and finishes.

Conclusion
Overall the interior design of these properties has been fulfilled through spatial planning and designating purpose to each apartment/property and consequently the required rooms in each property.
- The concept has been met thoroughly during the course of the design. Each room has incorporated all or some of the aspects of the design concepts. Primarily, the rich/ dark and sumptuous colour scheme requested has been used through all of the interiors, blended with gold chrome and velvet furnishings creating luxury and eclectic atmospheres.
- Secondly, the clients love of maximalism and biophilia has been incorporated throughout the designs mainly through bold, exotic wallpapers and faux plants. Maximalism relates to Victorian properties well as they were often decorated with excessive amounts of accessories. Oriental elements can also be seen in every room which helps to bring in Victorian design elements. In Victorian times travel became more widely available to counties in Asia which therefore had influences on Victorian interior design. Some design elements are also inspired by the families past holidays such as a safari holiday and their own trips to Asia.
- Contemporary art and fashion inspired prints have also been used all through the interior design as this is a great way to contemporise period properties. These have been blended with framed, old photos of Portland Square, respecting the properties past, harmoniously blending the old and new.
- Antiquaire design aspects can also be seen in certain areas of the properties through distressed finishes which help to accentuate the age of the houses/apartments.
- Each of the kids rooms are totally personal to them, incorporating there hobbies and favourite things. These bedrooms are also designed to grow with them.
- The rental property stands out on the Air B&B market with its bold and vibrant, yet luxury and relaxing atmosphere. There is nothing like it in the area.
- The design of Mrs Smith’s Mothers home meets the requirements of a more muted, pastel and traditional and homely scheme with accessibility for future proofing. It also incorporates the antique rocking chair and china tea sets as requested.
- The brand identity successfully communicates what the businesses are about and has a bold, clear and professional finish.
- Finally, the design of every room makes the most of its Victorian, period features with respectful design, enhancing the history with further historically inspired décor and antiques; but also contemporises each room through twenty-first century design, colours and features- creating completely transitional and timeless finishes.
- The overall cost of the entire project has come to £195,633.122, successfully meeting the budget.
